Patients visiting urgent care should keep in mind this is a first come, first served clinic for emergent needs. It is recommended to arrive early morning or early afternoon to register. Much like an emergency room, a patient may be seen before you based on the severity of the emergent need.
Services Offered
- Problem focused examinations, imaging (x-rays) and testing
- Management of pain, swelling and discomfort requiring immediate attention
- Management of broken fillings, broken dentures, loose crowns (caps)
- Management of fractured or chipped teeth
Fees and Costs
A $75 deposit is routinely collected toward services rendered during the visit.
In addition to the fees for examination and testing in the Urgent Care Clinic, there will be separate fees for treatment in the other clinics as well.
The $75 fee will be waived if:
- you are a patient of record in our clinics.
- you have an active West Virginia medicaid card
Where dental insurance is involved, a claim with the insurance company will be processed.
Directions
Upon arrival, patients should go directly to the Urgent Care Clinic registration desk and to check in. Walk in patients with emergent needs will be called on a first come, first served basis to begin the registration process. Evaluation and treatment is subject to the complexity of the cases registered before you which could delay your treatment.

What kind of treatment is provided at the Urgent Care clinic?
Patients experiencing emergent needs such as pain, swelling or bleeding may seek care at the Urgent Care clinic. The Urgent Care clinic does not provide routine or comprehensive care. From the Urgent Care clinic, patients may be referred to Oral Surgery, Endodontics or Prosthodontics. Those areas specialize in areas like extractions, root canals and crowns or bridges and have separate fees for treatment.
Emergencies could include:
- Severe dental pain
- Infection of wisdom teeth
- Facial swelling due to dental infection, infected mouth wounds or trauma
- Tooth fracture resulting in pain or causing uncontrolled bleeding
- Temporary crown lost and causing pain/bleeding
- Denture adjustment causing pain and functioning improperly
- Adjustment of an orthodontic wire piercing or causing damage inside the mouth, and loose brackets
Who will provide your care in the Urgent Care clinic?
The Urgent Care clinic is staffed by dental students who are working under the direct supervision of faculty.
How should you prepare for your visit?
- Patients should continue to take their prescribed medications as usual. That includes blood pressure medicine and diabetes medications.
- Do not stop aspirin therapy.
- Patients on blood thinners may be asked to have a laboratory test the day of treatment. In some cases, WVU Dental can order the necessary tests upon a patient's arrival.
- Pregnant patients must have a note from their ObGyn clearing them for care if extractions are necessary.
What if it is after hours or on a weekend?
After hours and weekend treatment of emergencies is available at the WVU Medicine Emergency Department.
Patient Parking
There are two main options for parking when being treated as a WVU Dental patient at our Health Sciences clinics.
- A small, patient parking area is located just in front of the main entry of the Health Sciences buildings.
- Short-term, paid parking is available at Mountaineer Station. A covered walkway leads to the Health Sciences Campus.

Urgent Care is Monday through Friday, first come first served clinic for patients with emergent needs only. The order of evaluation is subject to the complexity of registered cases. That could result in treatment being delayed until the afternoon or next day. After hours and weekends, WVU Medicine Emergency Department consults our on-call dentist to determine if emergency treatment is needed or if it is an urgent or routine matter to be treated in the non-emergency clinics.
